Homemade Crappie Jigs thumbnail
Fishing is an enjoyable and relaxing sport.

Fried crappie, hush puppies and coleslaw are a mainstay on southern tables. Whether you have access to a small farm pond or travel to a nearby lake to fish for crappie, having the perfect jig can make all the difference in whether your cooler is full when you come home. Avid crappie fishermen enjoy making their own homemade crappie jigs in order to save money on their fishing lures and to have bragging rights if they have a successful day of fishing.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a jig head into the fly-tying vise. The curve of the hook and the barb should be on the bottom.

    • 2

Wrap your thread onto the bobbin and then wrap it several times around the neck of the lead head.

    • 3

Position a feather or clump of animal hair next to the shank.

    • 4

Secure the feather or hair by wrapping the thread around it and the shank several times.

    • 5

Form the body of the jig by continuously wrapping the thread over the lead down to the point where the bait attaches.

    • 6

Tie the thread securely by using two overhand knots and clip the threads with scissors.

    • 7

Seal the jig by applying a couple of coats of clear nail polish. Allow it to dry between coats.
