Directions on Backwashing a Pool Filter
Backwashing is the process of cleaning your swimming pool filter without disassembling the entire unit. Backwashing is a type of maintenance that reverses the flow of water to clean the filter. As it becomes dirty and clogged, whether it be diatomaceous earth or sand media, the filter will become less efficient, and the water will become dirty quicker. Backwashing the filter removes the dirt from the filter tank. It's important to backwash the filter, because the pressure within the filter rises above normal after every vacuuming session. Backwashing will ensure your filter works efficiently and cleans the pool properly. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Turn the power to the pool pump off before beginning maintenance on the pool filter.
-
2
Turn the multiport valve, usually located on the right lower side of the pool filter, to "backwash." Restore power to the pool pump. The pump will push the water through the filter and allow the dirt and water to exit the waste valve.

-
3
Allow the water and media to continue flowing out the filter until the water runs clear. Turn off the pool pump.
-
4
Turn the multiport valve to "rinse." Turn the pool pump back on. Allow the pump to run for one minute; this will clean all the dirt and air from the plumbing lines. Turn off the pool pump.
-
5
Turn the multiport to "filter," and turn the pool pump back on. Repeat these steps anytime the filter becomes dirty and needs to be backwashed.
