How to Add a Fax Modem
Fax modems, once the industry standard for connecting to the Internet, have given way to high-speed solutions such as DSL and cable modems. As a result, most modern computers no longer include a modem as a standard feature. If you would like to use a dial-up Internet connection and you do not have a modem, you will need to purchase and install an aftermarket modem. Today, consumers can choose from a USB modem, which is external and easily removable or an internal modem, which is installed inside the computer.
Instructions
-
Internal Fax Modem
-
1
Locate the software included with the fax modem. Often, it is necessary to install hardware drivers before installing the hardware. If the drivers must be installed first, insert the disc that came with the modem and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
-
2
Shut down the computer. Once the computer is off, remove all cables from the computer, including the power adapter.
-
-
3
Remove the case of the computer. Some computers will have screws on the back that can be loosened using your fingers or a screwdriver, while others (such as many Dell models) will have a release button on the top of the case. Refer to your computer's user guide for proper case removal instructions.
-
4
Touch a metallic part of the computer case to discharge any static electricity from your hands.
-
5
Locate an open slot on your motherboard into which the fax modem will be inserted.
-
6
Remove the panel cover from the location of the case that will be occupied by the fax modem. Often, a single screw will secure the panel in place. Loosen the screw and then remove the panel. Do not discard the screw.
-
7
Insert the fax modem into the slot on the motherboard. Ensure that the card is fully inserted into the board. Secure the card by replacing the screw that was loosened when the panel cover was removed.
-
8
Replace the computer case cover, connect all the cables and then start up the computer. If the drivers were previously installed, the modem will be ready for use. If the drivers were not previously installed, Windows will automatically recognize the modem and then install the drivers. If the device is not recognized by Windows, insert the disc that was included with the modem and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
USB Fax Modem
-
9
Locate an unused USB port on your computer.
-
10
Plug the modem's USB cable into the open USB port. Once connected, Windows will automatically identify and install the drivers for the fax modem. If the drivers are not able to be located by Windows, insert the disc that was included in the packaging with the modem and follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation.
-
11
Plug the telephone cable into the modem. Connect the other end of the telephone cable to the phone jack in the wall to complete the installation.
