It is not difficult to get copies of your 2006 W2 forms.

There are two ways to access your 2006 W2 forms. Depending on whether you want an actual copy or just a summary of your old tax returns, you must fill out one of two request forms and submit each form to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The cost to obtain old tax returns varies, based on your request.

Instructions

    • 1

Download one of the two requests for tax returns. If you want a summary of your old W2 form, use the Request for Transcript of Tax Return (Form 4506-T). If you want an actual copy, use the Request for Copy of Tax Return (Form 4506).

    • 2

Type "W-2" in the Transcript Requested or Tax Return Requested section.

    • 3

Type "2006" in the Year or Period Requested section.

    • 4

Complete the rest of the form, print it out and sign it. If applicable, attach payment for your form request fee.

    • 5

Mail your request to one of four locations, depending on which state you live in. A list of these locations can be found in the "Chart for Individual Transcripts/Returns" section of both request forms.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before you file a request with the IRS, find out if your current or previous employer keeps copies of old tax returns. Ask if the company has copies of your 2006 W2 forms. This can save money.

  • A summary or transcript lists your entries for each line of an old tax form (i.e. what you wrote in the form's boxes). It does not include the directions and legal statements found on a tax form copy. As of 2010, the fee for each copy request is $57. There is no fee for a transcript request.

  • On the transcript request (Form 4506-T), check the box next to "Form W-2", "Form 1099 series," "Form 1098 series" or "Form 5498 series transcript." Transcript requests can also be submitted over the phone: 1-800-829-1040.
