To own and operate a business in Tracy, California, you must first obtain a license from the city. Licenses can be valid from three to 12 months, and taxes are due with each renewal. Section 6.04.270 of the Tracy Municipal Code allows the inspection of all businesses within the city limits for compliance with the business license requirements.

      Determine the type of application you need to complete. You will need to fill out one of five business license applications provided by the City of Tracy. Commercial business within the city limits require the General Business application, home based businesses need the Home Occupation Permit, general contractors use the Contractor Application, business outside the city limits need the General Business Outside application, and peddlers complete the Peddler Application.

      Obtain the proper application for your business. Go to the City of Tracy website and click on the "For Businesses" tab near the top of the page. Next click on the "Business Licenses" link on the left side of the page. The next page will have links to a PDF version of all five licenses on the right side.

      Complete the appropriate application. All the applications require that you provide a name, address, telephone number, driver's license number and Social Security number.

      Submit application and appropriate fees to the City of Tracy Business Licensing, 333 Civic Center Plaza, Tracy, CA 95376. Each application will instruct you how to calculate the fees that are owed. Your license will be sent to you in the mail.
