How to Register a Business in Japan

How to Register a Business in Japan thumbnail
Filling out the necessary forms for registering a business in Japan will take a couple of days.

To register a business in Japan, you will need to do two things: submit a "kojinjigyo no kaigyoutodokedesho" (private business starting register paper) and an "aoi tax" (blue tax or business tax) form. Both are available at your local city office or tax office and must be given to the tax office before starting the business.

Things You'll Need

  • Notification of commencement of business form
  • Blue tax form

Instructions

  1. The forms

    • 1

Obtain the "kojinjigyo no kaigyoutodokedesho" and "aoi tax" at your local city office. If they do not have it, the tax office will. Ask for directions to the tax office if you don't already know the location.

    • 2

Complete the "kojinjigyo no kaigyoutodokedesho." It is more difficult and it must be submitted first; the tax office will give you a little leeway on when you submit the "aoi tax" form, just so long as it is submitted before the end of the tax year (in April).

    • 3

Write your business' name and address, your name, birthdate and address in the top section of the form. You will need to put your seal ("inkan") next to your name to validate the form.

    • 4

In the next section, write the name and information of any employees, the start date of the business, which type of tax you will be completing, and which type of business you will be operating.

    • 5

Complete the "aoi tax" form by writing your name, address and your business' name and address at the top of the form. The tax office may ask you for additional information when you submit the form.

    • 6

File the notification of commencement of business ("kojinjigyo no kaigyoutodokedesho") and business tax forms at the tax office (see reference 1). You will be asked a number of questions. If you don't speak Japanese, bring someone who does, preferably someone who understands the business you are registering.

Tips & Warnings

  • To ease the process of submitting year-end taxes, it is a good idea to purchase bookkeeping software designed specifically for submitting the "aoi tax" forms. One such software package is the "Yayoi no aoi" series.
