How to Plan a Wedding in Ireland

How to Plan a Wedding in Ireland thumbnail
Couples can marry in an Irish castle.

Couples marrying in Ireland can select from an array of venues and vendors for a dream wedding day. U.S. citizens choosing to marry in Ireland need to overcome a few hurdles before their wedding day, including going through the marriage notification process and finding a church willing to marry non-Irish citizens. Therefore, couples marrying in Ireland should start the wedding planning process as soon as they choose the country as the destination for their nuptials.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the type of wedding you want to have---civil or religious. A civil ceremony is more convenient for non-Irish citizens planning to marry in the country, according to Ireland for Visitors. Couples choosing a religious ceremony need to establish residency and a relationship with a church before getting married there. Some churches, such as the Church of Ireland, discourage nonresidents from marrying in the country. Check with an Irish church about its requirements if you want a religious ceremony.

Choose a venue for your reception. Ireland offers a variety of options. Couples can choose from extravagant castles such as the Kilronan Castle in Ballyfarnon to traditional hotel venues such as the Knightsbrook Hotel Spa and Golf Resort in Trim. Each venue will offer different services and price points, so choose one that works best for you.

Fulfill Ireland marriage requirements. Couples choosing to marry in Ireland must notify the area's Registration Office to complete the formal marriage notification process. The couple must provide a photo ID (a passport works for U.S. citizens), birth certificate and application fee. The couple also must tell the Registration Office their wedding date and location, type of wedding (religious or civil), names and dates of birth of witnesses and details about the officiant. This notification must take place at least three months before the ceremony. Some couples, including those who do not live in Ireland, can petition to submit this notification by mail.

Select a wedding planner and vendors. A wedding planner is particularly useful when planning an out-of-country wedding, so establish a relationship with a reliable wedding planner who can help coordinate your vendors. Sign contracts with photographers, florists and caterers, among others.

Incorporate Irish traditions into your ceremony. An Irish wedding would not be complete without some cultural traditions. For example, Irish couples often walk together to their ceremony location, according to World Wedding Traditions. In addition, brides often use English lavender in their bouquets for a healthy and happy marriage.

Great to see Ireland getting some wedding press. It is a fantastic place to get married! I must say though that the Catholic church is fine about marrying non Irish as long as you have all of your home church documents in place. Baptismal Certs, confirmation certs and have done a pre marriage course. Registering to be married in Ireland can be done by post and then you meet the registrar in person a minimum of 5 days before the wedding but this can be done much earlier at a time when you come to meet suppliers and finalize your potential venue. Also you can do a Civil legal marriage and then have a blessing on a clifftop or beach for more romance. It is easier than it seems!!! Thanks!
