How to Store a Copier

Properly prepare and pack your photocopy machine for storage if it going to be out of commission for a while and you want to ensure that it will still be functioning when you need it again. A photocopy machine needs to be cleaned as well as wrapped up before storage. Securing a copier with wrapping will help protect internal and external parts. The storage environment also needs to be safe for the copier.

  • Fuser oil
  • Photocopier cleaning paper
  • Packing tape
  • Glass wipes
  • Packing and shipping cushioning foam
  • Plastic pallet wrap
  • Furniture blanket or sheet

      Clear the memory on the copier's hard drive. Copiers retain images of documents and clearing the memory will prevent a hacker from obtaining sensitive information. Consult your user's manual for directions.

      Unplug the machine.

      Open the copy cover hatch and remove the toner cartridge. Use the hose attachment on a vacuum to clean dust from the toner area.

      Remove the paper and vacuum the paper trays.

      Dampen a cloth with rubbing alcohol and clean the photocopier drum. The drum is the shiny, spinning, photoconductive cylinder that works to transfer toner to paper.

      Wipe down the fuser with fuser oil. The fuser is the cylinder subsequent the drum that works to bond the toner to the paper.

      Close the hatch and plug in the machine.

      Run photocopier cleaning paper through the machine to help clean all other elements along the copy path.

      Unplug the machine again, coil the cord tightly and secure it with packing tape.

      Wipe down the photocopier glass with a glass wipe. Do not spray glass cleaner directly onto the glass, as it can seep through the seams.

      Place a sheet of packing and shipping cushioning foam wrap on the glass and close the copier lid. Tape the lid shut.

      Wipe down the exterior of the machine with a cloth slightly dampened in rubbing alcohol.

      Tape all exterior trays and doors shut.

      Wrap plastic pallet wrap around the copier vertically and horizontally.

      Roll the copier to a safe, secure and temperature-controlled environment. Do not store the copier in an environment with high humidity, or with freezing or extremely hot temperatures. Only store the copier upright, not on its side. Never stack things on top of the copier. Do not store on carpeting, as fibers can build up inside the machine.

      Cover the copier with a furniture blanket or a sheet.
