How to Open a Port in a Westell DSL Modem
Westell manufacturers DSL modems for broadband Internet access. Westell DSL modems act like routers, blocking incoming traffic and filtering malicious attempts at accessing your internal network. If you want to use applications like Remote Desktop, gaming servers or web hosting, you need to open ports on your Westell DSL modem using the modem's configuration console interface.

Open your web browser and type the modem's IP address into the text box. The default IP address for your Westell DSL Modem is "192.168.1.1."

Enter the router's user name and password. The default user name is "admin" and the default password is "password." Click "OK.. This will open the main configuration console.

Click "Configuration" at the top of the window. Click "Define Custom Service" to open a port forwarding configuration screen. Select "Port Forwarding Ranges of Ports" and click the "Next" button.

Enter a name for the configuration. Enter the port ranges for your application in the text box labeled "Global Port Range." In the "Base Host Port" text box, enter the server where the router traffic is redirected. Select "TCP" for the port protocol and click "Next."

Click "Close" at the configuration summary screen. Close the web browser to complete the setup.
