Play ISO files using a virtual drive.

The term ISO file refers to a image file of the complete contents of a DVD or CD disc. They are commonly used when burning backup copies of discs for archiving or storage as they contain all directories, files and other content on the original disc. ISO files can't normally be played on a computer without using ISO mounting software or burning the image to a blank disc.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a virtual-drive program made for playing ISO files. There are several free and paid programs available online. Some of the most popular include MagicISO, Daemon Tools and Nero Burning ROM.

Launch the program. Start the application that you've chosen to install. It will then appear in Windows Explorer as an additional optical drive. You may also see the program icon in your task bar. Double click the drive, either from the program icon or Explorer, and choose "Mount." This option may also be available under the File menu of the program.

Locate the ISO file. Use the dialog box to search for the ISO file you want to mount. Select it with your mouse and it will be added to the drive. You can now access it just as you would a DVD or CD drive with an actual disc. Double click the drive to show the files and locate the "autoplay" file to launch the disc. If it is a software disc, the auto installer will start to run. If it's a DVD, your associated DVD player will launch and you will be taken to the start screen.
