Homemade Bait for Big Catfish

Homemade Bait for Big Catfish thumbnail
Experimentation is the key to making good homemade catfish bait.

Every serious angler is after "The Big One." Homemade bait makers have recipes that vary in flavor, smell and secret ingredients that they claim give them an edge over their competitors. All proven recipes are based on the nutritional needs of the catfish. According to Bait Big Fish, this species has a high lipid and protein requirement which makes adding over-the-counter amino acid supplements to the mix a great way to entice them. Properly mixed dough bait can last for hours in the water and is extremely cost effective to make.

Instructions

    • 1

Crack the eggs and add them to the mixing bowl. The exact number will vary according to the desired amount of bait, but four large eggs is sufficient to start with.

    • 2

Whisk the eggs to liquefy them and pour them into a measuring cup. Record the volume and pour them back into the mixing bowl.

    • 3

Add the same volume of liquid protein amino acid as liquefied eggs to the mixing bowl.

    • 4

Add one teaspoon of artificial sweetener for every four eggs used.

    • 5

Add one can of cat food.

    • 6

Stir in flour until the bait becomes doughlike to the point where it can be rolled into pellets roughly the size of marbles. Add more of the liquid and dry ingredients as necessary to achieve the proper consistency.

    • 7

Dry the pellets in the sun for several hours.

    • 8

Store the pellets in the Tupperware container until they are ready for use.

Tips & Warnings
