How to French Knit Using a Toilet Roll
French knitting is a procedure that children will find quick and easy to learn. French knitting can be done on a commercial wooden or plastic "knitting nancy." However, all that is really needed is a tube on which you can cut prongs, such as an empty toilet paper roll.
Things You'll Need
- Scissors
- Yarn
- Empty toilet paper or paper towel roll
- Crochet hook or blunt needle
Instructions

1
Cut the top of the roll with scissors so that the top has four prongs on one side.
-
2
Hold the roll in one hand while holding the yarn in the other.
-
-
3
Thread a length of yarn about the size of the roll through the middle of the roll. This is your leader. After each weave is brought over the prongs, you will need to pull the leader so the knitted tube drops through the roll.
-
4
Wrap the yarn around the prongs twice. Interweave the yarn around a prong, then bring the yarn around the next prong on the inside of the tube, and then around the prong. Do this twice more for the other two prongs, making sure the line of yarn stays on the inside of the roll. Then repeat this procedure so that each prong has two loops on it.

5
Bring the bottom loop on each prong over the top loop and off the prong using a crochet hook or a blunt needle.
-
6
Interweave the yarn on the prongs again so that there are two loops on the each prong.
-
7
Repeat the process by bringing the bottom loop over the top loop and off the prong, then weaving the yarn again. The knitted fabric will drop through the bottom of the roll in a knitted tube as you repeat, bringing the loops over one another and tugging the bottom string.

Tips & Warnings
Do not weave the yarn too tightly or it will break the prongs.
