AVIs need to be converted before they will work on the iPod.

Microsoft's Audio Video Interleave (AVI) format typically contains high-quality video content in large file sizes. AVIs work very well on PCs, but they don't play well with Apple products, including the iPod line of portable devices. Indeed, iPods cannot understand the AVI format at all. Thus, users may wish to convert AVIs into MP4s to place them on their iPods. Once they have place the AVI in the MP4 format, they can then put it onto their iPods.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the AVI file you want to convert on your hard drive.

    • 2

Navigate to an online conversion website and convert your AVI into an MP4 (see Resources for three useful options). All of the conversion sites perform AVI to MP4 conversion quickly and for free.

    • 3

Open iTunes (see Resources). You need the iTunes software to add video files to your iPod.

    • 4

Drag the MP4 you converted in Step 2 into your iTunes Library. The video will now be playable from within iTunes.

    • 5

Connect your iPod to your computer. Once it loads, iTunes will recognize the device and it will appear on the program's left menu bar.

    • 6

Locate the MP4 in your iTunes Library and drag it on top of your iPod's name on the left menu bar. This will add the video to your device, allowing you to watch the video at your leisure.
