Put Films on a DS Lite for Free

Forget about the PlayStation Portable, your Nintendo DS or DS Lite can play films and other videos just fine. All you need to play video on the go is a bit of homebrew hardware, particularly a SLOT-1 flash card. You can be catching up on episodes of everything from "Arrested Development" to "Zoey 101" in no time. Unless your videos come in the .DPG file type, you'll have to convert them before they work on your DS. A few free programs can take care of the conversion.

Things You'll Need

  • Nintendo DS or DS Lite game system
  • SLOT-1 flash card compatible with your DS
  • Windows computer with built-in MicroSD card reader or a USB port
  • USB MicroSD card-reader (if necessary)
  • MicroSD card
  • Homebrew DS multimedia player (MoonShell, probably)
  • BatchDPG
  • AviSynth
  • Mircosoft .NET Framework
  • FFDshow

Instructions

  1. Preparing the software

    • 1

Download and install AviSynth, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 and FFDshow onto your computer. Reboot your computer.

    • 2

Download BatchDPG and, if your SLOT-1 card doesn't have it, Moonshell.

    • 3

Extract BatchDPG wherever you please on your computer.

    • 4

Copy "avisynth.dll" to "C:\Windows\System32." If Windows is installed on a different drive than "C," substitute that drive in for C.

    • 5

Select the BatchDPG installation file and install it wherever you like.

    • 6

      Extract the Moonshell installation files.

    • 7

Gently place the MicroSD card into the card reader. If necessary, attach the card reader to your computer.

    • 8

Set up Moonshell on your MicroSD card. Select "Setup.exe" in the Moonshell installation files, and open it.

    • 9

Choose English as your language (or whatever you prefer), and follow the directions. Install the program to the drive that represents your MicroSD card.

    • 10

On the MicroSD card, create a folder called "Videos."

    Preparing the videos

    • 11

Open BatchDPG. It should be located in the Start Menu.

    • 12

Click the "browse" button next to "media file." Select the video you'd eventually like to play on your MicroSD card.

    • 13

Select the "Videos" folder you created as the final output path of the video. Adjust any settings you might like to change.

    • 14

Click "Add," and "Run". Repeat this process with all the videos you would like to load on the DS.

    • 15

After the files are finished transferring, eject the MicroSD card from your computer. Disconnect it properly.

    Playing files on the DS

    • 16

Insert the MicroSD card into your SLOT-1 flash card.

    • 17

Insert the SLOT-1 flash card into the DS game slot of your Nintendo DS.

    • 18

      Turn on the Nintendo DS.

    • 19

In the card's menu, select Moonshell.

    • 20

In Moonshell, navigate to the "Videos" folder. Select the video you'd like to play.

Tips & Warnings

  • When using BatchDPG, be sure to set the number of CPU cores to "1" unless you have a Dual Core Processor.
