1
Find the source of the moisture. Unless you want to continuously combat the development of new mildew, you will need to find and seal off the source of the moisture. Wash any fabrics that contain mildew. Air out mildew-heavy spaces with ventilation fans or open windows to absorb the excess humidity.

2
Mix one part bleach with one part warm water to create a cleaning solution for your mildew. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and liberally cover the area with the mildew. Use a damp washcloth to scrub the mildew away. The bleach smell will mask the mildew odors and will fade as the area airs out.

Install a dehumidifier in the space to combat the smell of the mildew. This will also help prevent against the development of even more mildew. After you install your dehumidifier and wash the mildew, use an air and fabric freshener to detract from the smell of the mildew and disperse evenly through the space.

Place baking soda or charcoal briquettes in the space to absorb any unpleasant odors. These items can also be used in cabinets, closets or under mildew-ridden furniture. You can also sprinkle baking soda over fabric and allow it to sit for several minutes before vacuuming up excess powder.

5
Remove mildew smell from clothing and fabrics with dryer sheets. After washing and drying your fabrics as instructed on the care label, store in drawers or boxes that are lined with dryer sheets. This will cover any remaining mildew smell and absorb moisture.
