How to Stop Spam to an Email Address

How to Stop Spam to an Email Address thumbnail
Many email programs allow users to filter spam before it reaches the inbox.

Spammers are known for sending unsolicited bulk emails to random email addresses. They wish to promote their products or services and spamming allows them to reach a large number of people with minimal effort. Spam creates headaches for email users, clutters their inboxes and often allows embarrassing or offensive material to enter their personal email inbox. Email providers have added filters to email programs that allow users to filter out spam before it reaches their inbox.

Instructions

  1. Gmail

    • 1

Click the check box next to a spam message that has appeared in your inbox.

    • 2

Click the "Actions" button on the top of the email toolbar and click "Filter messages like these." A "Create a Filter" page will pop up.

    • 3

Create the filter by filling in the fields on the "Create a Filter" page. Decide whether Gmail will filter future emails by sender's email address, subject line, inclusion of certain words, exclusion of certain words or addition of an attachment. Click "Next Step."

    • 4

Click the box next to the action that the filter should take. The options include deleting the email, moving it to a selected folder, labeling it (choose the label), marking it as "read" or marking it with a star. Click "Create Filter."

    Hotmail

    • 5

Open the Hotmail inbox and click on "Options" in the upper right corner. Click on "More Options" from the drop-down menu and then click on "Filters and reporting."

    • 6

Under "Select the filter level you want to apply to incoming messages" click "Exclusive." This provides the highest level of spam filtering in Hotmail, ensuring that the recipient will only receive emails from contacts, noted safe senders, Hotmail service announcements and requested alerts.

    • 7

Take care to mark all recipients of your email messages as "safe senders" so that Hotmail's filter will not filter them out of your inbox.

    Yahoo

    • 8

Open the Yahoo inbox and click the "Options" link in the upper right corner of the page. Select "Mail Options" from the drop-down menu.

    • 9

Click the Spam link on the left side of the page. Click the check box in front of "Automatically send suspected spam to my Spam folder option." Click "Save Changes."

    • 10

Return to the inbox. Check the box on the left of any spam messages that come into the inbox, either before or after opening the message. Click "Spam" on the inbox's toolbar. In the future, the Yahoo SpamGuard will mark the message as spam and immediately deposit it into the spam folder.
