How to Install Bicycle Training Wheels thumbnail
Training wheels help develop balance and motor skills.

Bicycle training wheels allow a young cyclist to establish her balance and familiarity with the bicycle without the risk of injury from falling. A typical set of training wheels attaches to the rear wheel axle of the bicycle and requires no special tools. Installing the training wheels properly helps ensure the safety of the newbie cyclist as she gains the confidence and motor skills necessary to one day ride on two wheels.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the bicycle on its kickstand. Lacking a kickstand, turn the bicycle over and place it gently on the saddle and handlebar. The bicycle will remain upright while the training wheels are being attached.

    • 2

Use a crescent wrench and remove each of the rear wheel axle nuts. Each axle tip may contain two nuts. Remove only the first of the two nuts. Turn the nuts counterclockwise to loosen them.

    • 3

Align the hole in one of the training wheel brackets with the axle tip, and slide the bracket onto the axle.

    • 4

Hold the training wheel in place, and thread the axle nut back onto the axle. Tighten the nut with just your fingers. Leaving the nut loose allows for adjustment of the training wheel before final tightening.

    • 5

Attach the second training wheel to the other end of the axle. Thread the nut onto the axle and tighten it with your fingers.

    • 6

Turn the bike back over onto its wheels. For kickstand-equipped bikes, release the kickstand.

    • 7

Raise each training wheel so that they just clear the ground when the bike is standing perfectly upright. This position teaches the young cyclist to learn to ride without relying on the feel of the training wheels. The training wheels are simply to catch the bicycle if it leans too far in either direction.

Use the crescent wrench to fully tighten each of the axle nuts, fixing each training wheel firmly in place.
