How to Refill the Canon PG-40

Canon's PG-40 is an inkjet printer cartridge that provides black ink to some desktop printer models in the Canon line. While some may purchase the Canon PG-40 replacement cartridges, others choose to refill their old cartridge with black replacement ink to save money. With the ink and a syringe tool, you can quickly refill your cartridge. Properly refill the Canon cartridge to avoid malfunction and crisp images.

  • Thumb drill

      Protect a flat surface with several layers of paper towels in the case of spills.

      Remove the Canon PG-40 cartridge from your printer and position it on top of the paper towels so that the manufacturer's label is upright.

      Find the small dimple just below the number "40" on the label on the top of the cartridge and enlarge it with the thumb drill.

      Insert the tip of the syringe into the black printer ink and pull back the plunger to fill it with approximately 20 mL of ink.

      Navigate the tip of the syringe into the enlarged refill hole opening and push it down into the cartridge. Release the ink very slowly to properly fill the Canon PG-40 cartridge. Once the ink is released, remove the syringe from the refill hole return the cartridge to the printer. Allow it to sit upright in the printer for seven to eight hours for best results.
