A tax identification number, also known as an Employer Identification Number, is used to identify a business for tax purposes and is issued by the Internal Revenue Service. In the state of Ohio, a Tax ID Number is required to file your taxes and to legally operate as a business.

      Gather the information you need to receive your Ohio Tax ID Number. This includes your contact information, the name and location of your business and the type of business you operate.

      Decide how you want to apply for an Ohio Tax ID Number. You can apply online, by phone, by fax or by mail. The Internal Revenue Service prefers that you apply online.

      Access the online application if you choose to apply online. The application can be found onthe IRS website under the "Businesses" tab. Be sure to select "Ohio" from the drop-down menu when asked which state your business is located in. You will be issued an Ohio Tax ID Number immediately upon submitting your form.

      Call 1-800-829-4933 if you choose to apply by phone. You can call this number between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. You will receive your Ohio Tax ID Number during the phone call.

      Obtain a Form SS-4 if you plan to apply by fax or through the mail. This form is available on the IRS website under the "Businesses" tab. Print and complete the form and provide your signature. Fax the completed form to 869-669-5760, or mail it to:

      Cincinnati, OH 45999.

      You will be given your Tax ID Number within four days when applying by fax and four weeks when applying by mail.
