How to Amplify Cable TV Input Signal

How to Amplify Cable TV Input Signal thumbnail
A cable distribution amplifier is designed to boost an incoming cable signal.

Long cable TV runs often suffer from image degradation. Available in a variety of strengths and sizes, cable amplifiers are meant to mitigate much of this loss by boosting the incoming signal to downstream displays. Although not meant to solve all signal loss issues, if the existing cable is terminated correctly and of sufficient gauge, cable amplifiers can do wonders for insertion loss. All that is required are an outlet to plug the amplifier into and the existing RG-6 coax.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the incoming cable feed from the outside. This is typically found in a basement or the lowest level in a structure, and is often connected to a splitter.

    • 2

Screw the coax carrying the incoming cable feed into the input leg of the amplifier. Screw the coax leading into the rest of the structure (typically via splitter) onto the output legs of the amplifier.

    • 3

Plug the amplifier's AC power adapter into a nearby outlet. Turn on a display and evaluate the image quality. Return to the amplifier and adjust the attenuation knob until all displays offer a satisfactory picture.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always make all coaxial connections to the amplifier with the AC adapter unplugged to prevent shorts.
