How to Keep a Puppy From Biting His Tail
A puppy will bite humans and other puppies out of aggression, instinct, curiosity or a sense of play. When a puppy begins to bite itself, particularly its own tail, many owners will assume that it is a game or the puppy is simply eccentric. This tail biting can quickly turn from an unusual amusement to a obsessive tick, which can cause the puppy to injure itself. There are several ways to prevent a puppy from biting its own tail.

1
Offer the puppy a toy each time it begins to bite its tail. This alternative may distract the puppy from biting its own tail if it is doing it out of boredom.
-
2
Take the puppy for a long walk at least once a day. The puppy will become too tired from this physical exercise to focus on biting its own tail.

3
Distract the puppy with a loud noise each time it begins obsessively chewing on its own tail. Clap your hands together and take the opportunity to offer the puppy an alternative to chewing, such as a toy or bone.
-
4
Correct the puppy each time it begins to bite its tail. Walk up to the puppy and tell it "No" in a firm voice. Each time the puppy stops biting its tail when instructed, give the puppy praise.

5
Speak to the puppy's veterinarian about having the puppy placed on anti-anxiety medication. This should be used as a last resort if no other tactics successfully stop the puppy from incessant tail biting. These medications can be dangerous for puppies and should only be given in the correct dosage and prescribed by a licensed veterinarian.
