How to Change the Codes for Email Attachments

Change the codes for attachments to open them with other programs.

Email attachments come coded to be opened with a certain program. That’s why, when some attachments arrive, they open automatically. Others will open with a certain program when you click on them. However, if you don’t have the program on your computer that the email attachment has been coded to, you will get an error message. It is easy to change the code or open the email attachment with another program.

Instructions

1. Open your email program. Click on the message that has an attachment on it. Open that message.

2. Put your cursor over the attachment’s name or file name. Right-click with your mouse.

3. Choose “Open With” from the list of possibilities.

4. Scroll through the list of programs and choose one that you know matches the type of file you are trying to open. Choose a picture software for photos or a video software for videos.

5. Click on the type of software to open up the attachment with that program. This will change the code for that particular email attachment and allow you to open it with that program.
