How to Call International Numbers From the USA

How to Call International Numbers From the USA thumbnail
Call anywhere in the world from your home or cell phone.

If you have friends or family living abroad, it's likely that you'll want to call them from time to time. However, simply picking up the phone and dialing the number won't get you connected. An exit code and a specific country code must first be dialed when calling international numbers from the United States.

Instructions

    • 1

Dial "011." This is the exit code that must be used when calling countries outside of the United States and Canada.

    • 2

Press the country code for the nation you are calling.

    • 3

Dial the area code of the telephone number, if one exists. Some international numbers do not have area codes.

    • 4

Punch in the remainder of the telephone number to complete the call.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the international number starts with a 0 (zero), do not dial the 0 (zero) as part of Step 4. In this case, the number is a "trunk code" that is used for calls made from within many countries. The trunk code is not necessary when making an international call from the United States.

  • International calls typically have higher per-minute rates. Check with your phone service provider in advance.
