How to Connect a Laptop to an RCA Connection

Standard RCA-type audio plugs need an adapter to work with a laptop.

RCA connections are standard 1/4-inch round jacks commonly used for audio-video components. The RCA connection provides a fast, reliable way to hook up components so they can interact; for example, sending an audio signal from a CD player to an amplifier or receiver using common stereo cables with white and red RCA connectors on each end. Laptop computers use a smaller 1/8-inch mini-jack for audio output (such as the headphone port) or the line-in port (used for recording). Connecting a laptop to an RCA connection requires a Y-adapter, available at electronics stores.

Things You'll Need

• Y-adapter with 1/8-inch plug and two RCA-type jacks
• Stereo cable with two RCA connectors on each end

Instructions

1. Insert the small plug on the Y-adapter into the laptop's line-in port to set up a recording project or connect the plug to the headphones jack to send audio from the laptop to another device, such as a stereo with full-size speakers.

2. Insert the white and red RCA connectors on one end of the cable into the jacks labeled "L" and "R" on the Y-adapter. White connects to the L jack.

3. Insert the RCA plugs on the other end of the cable into a set of output jacks on a device for recording to the laptop or connect to a set of audio input jacks when the opposite end of the cable is plugged into the laptop's headphone port.
