How to Sync Thunderbird & Lighting

Mozilla Thunderbird, the open-source email client developed by the same team that created Firefox, lacks by default a calendaring or task management feature. Email client rivals such as Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes, feature built-in calendaring abilities. Thunderbird, like Firefox, is designed to be used in conjunction with plugins or add-ons so you can customize the application for particular usage. Lightning is a calendaring and schedule add-on for Thunderbird. As Lightning is developed as an extension to Thunderbird, once it is set up no further synchronization is needed as all tasks are performed from within the program.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the Lightning add-on (see References).

    • 2

Open Thunderbird, then click "Tools," followed by "Add-ons." Click "Install," then browse to your web browser's default download directory. Select the "lightning" plugin you have just downloaded, then click "Install."

    • 3

Click "Restart Thunderbird" to complete the installation of Lightning. Once Thunderbird has reopened, you will have fully installed calendar functionality via Lightning.

    • 4

Click the Calendar button in Thunderbird to switch to Calendar mode. Click "File," then "New," then "Calendar" to set up a new calendar. If you want to synchronize to a remote calendar, click "From the Network" or if you want to create a new calendar, click "From My Computer." If you are synchronizing a remote calendar, you will need an address for the calendar and login details if required.

Click "Finish" to finalize the installation and synchronization of a calendar using Lightning in Thunderbird.
