1
Remove the Formica countertop. Formica countertops were often attached with glue, so be prepared to apply some force to remove it. Use a wrecking bar to wedge a loose area of the Formica and pull up the counter with the claw end of a hammer. Work around the edges of the Formica until it is completely pulled up and dispose of it.

Depending on how much glue was on the Formica and how long it had been in place, some plywood might have been damaged when the Formica was pried off. If so, the plywood should be replaced. Measure the sheet that is damaged and replace it with the same amount.

Choose your replacement countertop material. Once you have decided, give the measurements for your countertop to your local home and garden store to be ordered or cut to size.
-
4
Purchase a glue that is specific to the product you are using. For instance, a tile adhesive works well for a tile countertop. Spread the glue evenly onto the plywood and glue the replacement countertop onto the plywood.

5
Press your new countertop onto the plywood. With a rag, clean off any excess glue. Use clamps to secure the new countertop to the plywood and allow 24 hours for the glue to dry completely.
