How to Start a Drive-In Theater Business

How to Start a Drive-In Theater Business thumbnail
Drive-in theaters provide hours of entertainment for customers.

Drive-in theaters used to be common in many areas. They are not as common today, though there has been a revival of interest recently in drive-ins. Many people have warm memories of going to the drive-in with their families. There was food available, and a playground. (See Reference 1.) Children could watch cartoons before the main feature, and watch the huge screen while sitting in the car. Others remember dates at the drive-in, and even sneaking people into the area in the trunk of the car.

Try to locate an existing drive-in that is no longer in use. Find out who owns it. Try city hall for this type of information. Contact the owner and discuss the prospect of purchasing the business from him or her. Make an agreement about the sale, how much you will be expected to pay and by when. Create a business plan, and try to obtain a business loan. (See Reference 2.)

    • 2

Make another visit to city hall. Find out what you have to do to take over the business. Ask about how to obtain required licenses and permits, and how to file your business name.

Find out what updates to the area, equipment and buildings will be needed. Arrange any necessary inspections relating to renovating the property. Be sure any existing playground areas are safe for children.

    • 3

Begin purchasing the needed items to reopen the drive-in. Clean the bathroom thoroughly and stock it. Set up the kitchen area and disinfect all surfaces. Start bringing in the cooking equipment and other necessities. Post inspection certificates, as well as licenses or permits. Decide what foods and beverages will be sold, which ones will be prepared by employees and which will be brought in from outside sources. Find suppliers for everything you need. Begin looking for a professional film booker, who can get the movies to you before the business is ready to open. Call several film bookers to determine who will work best for you. (See Reference 3.)

Begin the application process. Post ads for employees in local newspapers and online. Decide what qualities you are looking for in the people you hire, and interview qualified applicants. Choose the people you believe are the best fit for each position available. Have a training week so everyone is aware of what you expect from them.

Bring in the rest of the food and other items needed for the first few nights of business. Decide on prices for everything and post them accordingly. Make sure uniforms, if required, are ready to be worn.Start advertising the grand opening of your drive-in business, and enjoy your success.
