How to Make a Wool Futon
A heavy and insulated fabric, wool provides cushion and coziness when used in a variety of home essentials from blankets and duvets to couch covers and futon mattresses. Making a futon mattress with wool provides you with a crafty task that allows you to determine how much cushion and firmness you want in your futon. For even the novice craft maker, making a wool futon mattress proves achievable and worth the effort.

1
Measure and cut a rectangular strip of canvas measuring about 70 by 80 inches. Repeat this with another rectangle of canvas.
-
2
Place one of the sheets of canvas out in front of you and smooth out any wrinkles or creases. Squeeze a thick layer of fabric glue along all but the top edge of the fabric. Make the line of fabric glue about an inch thick on the three sides you are gluing.

3
Place the other rectangle sheet of canvas on top of the other, lining up the sides evenly. Press the sides of the fabric together to adhere the edges together. Let the fabric sit for about 20 minutes so it can dry.
-
4
Turn the fabric sheet pouch inside out, to conceal the seamed edges.
-
5
Stuff loose wool filling into the opened end of the canvas pouch. Depending on how firm or soft you want the futon mattress to be, you may need anywhere from 30 to 150 pounds of wool. You can obtain this wool from fabric craft supply stores or online.
-
6
Glue the opened end of the pouch together by first folding in the frayed edges and then squeezing the fabric glue over the folded surface of each side. Press the two sides together firmly for about a minute and then release. Let the futon mattress dry for approximately one hour before using.

Tips & Warnings
Place the futon mattress on a futon frame, or use it as a guest pallet for floor use. It can also be used as a mattress topper for your current bed to increase the comfort and insulation during the cold winter months.
