  • Phillips head screwdriver

The Geo Metro is a small compact car produced by General Motors from 1985 to 2001. The ignition system starts with an ignition switch. When the key is turned, the ignition switch sends power to the starter. Removing the switch means taking the steering column shroud off to access the switch. The switch can then be tested to see if it is the problem with a faulty ignition system.

Step 1

Open the hood to disconnect the battery. Unbolt the negative cable from the battery.

Step 2

Open the driver side door to ensure plenty of room to work while removing the switch.

Step 3

Unbolt the steering column shroud with a flat tip screwdriver. Pull the shroud off the console once the screws are removed. Pull the top off once the bottom is removed.

Step 4

Disconnect the wiring harness leading to the back of the switch. The switch will be located next to the ignition key lock.

Step 5

Unscrew the two screws holding the switch to the column with a Phillips head screwdriver. Pull the switch away from the column.

Warning

Use caution around automotive electrical systems by isolating the battery before working on electrical components.
