How to Replace a Plunger-Type Tub Drain
Plunger-type tub drains work by blocking the flow of water out of your bathtub at the drain. The plunger itself sits in part of the bathtub plumbing called the overflow tube. A switch on the front of the tube raises or lowers the plunger. These types of drains have been in use across the U.S. for years, and like any other fixture, will eventually wear out. Replacing a plunger-type tub drain isn't difficult, and with the help of a specialized tool, you can have the job done in as little as an afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Find the overflow cover plate in your bathtub. In the majority of installations, this is located just beneath the tub spout. There will be two screws holding it in place and a lever on the front that controls the plunger.
-
2
Remove the screws holding the overflow plate in place.
-
-
3
Gently pull the overflow plate away from the tub. Use caution, because it is still connected by a linkage to the plunger in the overflow below.
-
4
Pull the plunger out of the overflow tube by the linkage.
-
5
Apply silicone grease to the plunger on the new overflow. Slip this into the overflow tube and gently lower it into the bottom of the tube.
-
6
Replace the overflow plate. Secure with the screws.
-
7
Insert the tines on the drain removal tool into the drain on the bathtub. Turn the removal tool counter-clockwise to unscrew the drain.
-
8
Clean away the drain opening in the bottom of the tub. Scrape away any old caulk or putty with a putty knife. Use a bathroom cleaner and rag to clean up any mold or mildew.
-
9
Turn the new drain flange upside down. Insert the caulk into the caulk gun. Trim off the end at the one-quarter mark with scissors. Apply a bead of caulk to the rim of the drain flange.
-
10
Turn the flange right-side-up. Insert into the drain opening. Tighten with the removal tool. Allow the caulk to dry according to manufacturer's instructions before using the tub.
