Becoming a freelance writer can be a rewarding career.

Freelancing is a booming career path, especially with the explosion of the Internet and the economic downturn. Many people who used to work in a corporate setting are turning to freelancing as a second job or a new full-time job. Writing is a huge part of the freelancing world. Freelancing can be done online or through newspapers, magazines or books. Getting started is sometimes the most difficult part, but it can be done cheaply and quickly, if you are dedicated.

Create a schedule for yourself. It is easy to fall under the impression that work will just come to you, but that is not true. You have to work at getting work. Set a schedule of when you will look for freelance writing jobs, when you will market your ideas and when you will actually work at writing.

    • 2

Join a freelancing jobs board. Many of these are free or have a minimal subscription cost. These job boards post jobs for freelancers to bid on. You may have to start with a lower income on the projects, but once you get a few jobs under your belt, you can charge a higher rate.

Look everywhere for jobs. They can come from the newspaper, a local magazine that you read or a doctor’s office that has out-of-date brochures. Approach the organization with an idea about how you can help it with its writing.

    • 4

Create business cards, especially if you are thinking about doing a lot of local freelancing. You can create professional-looking business cards online, for as low as $10 for 500 cards.

    • 5

Set up a website all about you. Showcase articles that you have written, or provide links to them if they are online. Provide contact information, as well as information about what you like to write about, or what you excel at. This is your chance to boast about yourself, and really market yourself. A website can cost as little as $11 a year and are well worth the investment.

    • 6

Network. Tell all of your friends and family that you have started a freelancing business. Ask them to tell their friends and other family members. Announce it on any social-networking site where you are a member. Carry your business cards around, and pass them out to anyone you talk to about your new business.

    • 7

Send out queries to magazines and newspapers about articles you would like to write, or articles that you have written but have not had published anywhere. Make sure you write your query in a way that really sells it to the editor.

    • 8

Write. All the work you do to become a freelancer will come to nothing if you do not actually put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, and write. If you must, write for free for an organization, just to keep your finger in the pot.
