Put your mattress on the ground and use it to help you measure the frame for the bed. Use the 2 x 6s to build a box around the mattress, leaving enough space between the mattress and the frame for bedding.

    • 2

Create the bottom of the bed by attaching plywood to the frame. Use drywall screws for stability, and consider reinforcing the bottom of the frame with 2 x 4s for added stability.

    • 3

Figure out how high you want the bed to be. Cut four 4 x 4s to create the posts for the bed. The bed will end up at the height of the mattress plus the height of the posts.

Set the posts where the bed will stand and lift the frame on to the posts. You'll probably need a few friends to help out. Use lag bolts to secure the frame to the posts.

Make the ladder. Use two 2 x 4s to form the sides of the ladder, and cut slants at the ends so that the ladder has a 60-degree slant. Cut a 2 x 4 into several steps, and place each slat 10 inches apart along the ladder. Screw everything together so that the ladder doesn't fall apart or fall off the bed.
