How to Install a Battery in the ThinkPad R31

The IBM ThinkPad R31 is a notebook computer with an Intel Pentium III or Celeron processor. Although the ThinkPad R31 is several years old, many models include internal wireless adapters -- one of the essential components of any modern laptop. However, if you find that the battery in the ThinkPad R31 no longer holds the charge it once did, this can be a significant limiting factor in your ability to use the computer on the go.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut down the operating system completely. If you think that the ThinkPad R31 might be in a low-power state such as Sleep or Standby, turn the computer on, allow Windows to load, and shut it down again. Disconnect any cables, and turn the ThinkPad R31 over with the screen side facing down.

    • 2

Push the plastic release latch next to the battery away from the battery pack, and hold it in place with your finger.

    • 3

Place another finger in the small hole next to the battery pack, and use it as leverage to lift the battery out of the ThinkPad R31. Do not touch the metal contacts on the side of the battery.

    • 4

Place the new battery into the compartment on the bottom of the ThinkPad R31 so that the bottom of the battery is flush with the bottom of the computer.

    • 5

Let go of the release latch next to the battery pack.
