Research your market. Whether you have your own product or service, or you plan on promoting other products or services, you want to have a clear idea of who the visitors to your website will be, and what exactly they are looking for. The market you target is defined as your niche.

Research your keywords. Keywords are the terms that people use when they perform a search online. So, for example, if someone is looking for classes to train their dogs, they will type in "dog training classes" or other similar terms. This term is referred to as a keyword, even if it is more than one word in length. In order to find the exact terms that people in your niche are typing in, access the free Google AdWords Keyword Research Tool. Simply type in general terms that apply to your niche and see what keywords the tool provides you with. Google offers you a list of relevant keywords, how frequently they are searched for, the level of competition, how much advertisers are spending on those keywords, and more. You can download all of these keywords in a CVS file. Choose three to five of these keywords that will best represent your web page.

Purchase a domain name at GoDaddy or NameCheap. Dot com domain names usually cost about $10 per year, or you can purchase domains that end in .biz, .org, .info, .edu, and more. It's important that your domain name includes the one keyword that best targets your web page's content. So, for example, if the main keyword is "dog training classes," then you want your domain name to be dogtrainingclass.com (or .biz, .info or whichever one you chose) If your main keyword is not available, then add a word before or after your keyword, for example, bestdogtrainingclasses, or dogtrainingclasseshere, etc. Having your keyword in your domain name is crucial to being visible in your niche. It makes it more likely that the search engines will put your site in the top results when someone does a search for the particular keyword that you are targeting.

Get web hosting. After you have your domain name, you will need a hosting account which you can also purchase at GoDaddy, HostGator or any of the many other hosting providers. You will host your domain name at your hosting account. Follow the instructions of your hosting provider to host your domain.

Create your page in your HTML editor. Follow the instructions in your HTML editor (Dreamweaver, NVU or others) to create your page. Good, keyword-targeted content insures that the search engines include your site in their results when someone performs a relevant search. Your web page must include at least five topics, named exactly with the keywords that you chose to best represent your site. For example, if a keyword was "obedience dog training classes," you will create one topic with that keyword in the title, for example "Five criteria to look for in obedience dog training classes." Write at least 500 words about this topic and include the words "obedience dog training classes" at least five times in the text. Write at least four more articles using your other keywords. Make sure that the product or service you are promoting is visible as a banner, or a clickable link on the top right-hand corner of your page.

The graphics of your site should be simple, and subtle. The background should be white or lightly colored, and the product you are promoting should be what stands out, whether as a banner ad or text format.
