How to Clean a PVC Trap Under a Bathroom Sink
The trap beneath a sink is typically constructed of PVC (polyvinyl-chloride, a plastic) and shaped in a U. The shape of the trap means that there will always be some standing water in the bottom of the trap, creating a barrier that prevents sewer gasses from leaking into the house through the sink. Cleaning clogs from a u-trap is a simple procedure for even the most inexperienced homeowner, as the plastic fittings can be turned by hand, eliminating the need for a wrench. Position a bucket beneath the u-trap to catch the water in the trap. Sit on the floor facing the trap and locate the two collars where the trap meets the remaining plumbing. Grasp one collar and turn it to the left until it has unscrewed from the trap and can be pushed up the piece of pipe leading out. Repeat with the second collar, supporting the trap in place with your other hand.

Pull the PVC u-trap downward to separate from the piping and dump any water into the bucket. Bend a piece of firm wire in half to fashion a poker. Holding the trap above the bucket and insert the wire through the length of the trap to dislodge any clogs, dumping them into the bucket.
