How to Install a Television Set to a Brick Wall

How to Install a Television Set to a Brick Wallthumbnail
Mounting a TV on brick can be simple when using the proper tools

With the design and versatility of modern flat-panel television sets, many people are now choosing to hang their sets directly on a wall rather than a stand or traditional entertainment center. The process of hanging a TV is not as difficult as it may seem; there are many easy-to-install quality mounting brackets on the market. However, if you are hanging your new flat panel on a brick wall or over a fireplace there are a couple of additional things to consider.

Determine a location for your TV. Keep in mind where the cables will need to run from and whether there will be glare from a window or light source. In terms of height, a good rule of thumb is for the set to be at eye level while seated. Draw a small X at the center location with a piece of chalk.

Hold the mounting bracket up against the wall. Using a level, ensure the bracket is straight. This is the point where mounting on brick is a bit different than mounting on drywall. Masonry anchors will work best in the mortar joints (the spaces between the bricks). Align the bracket so that the screw holes line up with the mortar joints before marking. With your chalk, mark where the screws will go into the brick wall.

Pre-drill holes into the brick wall with a masonry bit that is big enough to accommodate size 8 masonry anchors; insert the anchors. You may need to tap these in with a rubber mallet. The anchors will fill the space in the mortar and grab the two adjoining bricks creating a solid foundation to screw the bracket into.

Screw in the wall portion of the mounting bracket. Gently tug on the bracket to ensure it is snug and secure.

Attach the second part of the mounting bracket directly to the TV. There are a number of mounting holes along the back of all flat panel televisions; simply line up the bracket and attach with the screws from the kit.

      • 6

Raise the TV to the wall bracket. With an assistant, align the TV bracket to the wall bracket and slide the TV in place on the wall. Most mounts have a locking system which includes a switch or toggle. Follow the manufacturer's guide to engage.
