How to Feed a Baby Cow Milk

How to Feed a Baby Cow Milk thumbnail
Some baby cows must be formula fed.

Many people who raise livestock will experience a mother cow that rejects or refuses to feed its calf. When this happens, it is important to feed the baby cow milk yourself in order for it to receive the nutrients it needs to thrive. With a few materials from your local livestock or feed store, you can successfully feed any baby cow milk.

Instructions

    • 1

Boil at least 2 quarts of water in a large pot on a stove.

    • 2

Place the feeding bottle and nipple into the boiling water for five minutes to sterilize them. Remove the bottle and nipple with a pair of tongs and place them upside-down on a clean towel until they are cool enough to touch.

    • 3

Read the instructions on the milk replacement or calf formula package to ensure you know how to correctly mix the amount of milk you need.

    • 4

Pour the milk replacement or calf formula into the bottle, and add the proper amount of warm water.

    • 5

Stir the milk replacement or calf formula until it is completely dissolved, and secure the nipple onto the bottle. Do not try to simply shake the bottle to mix it--you will not be able to dissolve all of the formula this way.

    • 6

Sit down and gently hold the baby cow in your lap, if it is small enough. Otherwise, stand directly in front of it.

    • 7

Drip the milk onto its nose and mouth so that it will know to start suckling, and then put the nipple into the calf's mouth.

    • 8

Feed the baby cow until it has suckled all of the milk and no more remains in the bottle.
