How to Build a Landscaping Wall From Decorative Blocks

Landscaping walls serve many purposes, from retaining walls that hold back hills of soil to purely decorative walls that surround flower beds. Decorative blocks are designed so that you can fit them tightly together for a wall with a great deal of stability without needing to cement them together. When built securely, a decorative block wall can serve your needs for years to come.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovel
  • Road mix
  • Decorative blocks with lips
  • Gravel
  • Prepare the foundation space. Dig a trough the length of your desired wall that is one tenth the height of your final wall.

  • Build your wall base. Pack approximately 6 inches of road mix into the trough for a sturdy base. Set the first row of decorative blocks, lips down, in the trough on top of the road mix.

  • Stack your decorative blocks one row at a time. Ensure that the lips face down and overlap the rear edge of the blocks below them.

  • Fill in the space behind your new wall with gravel. This allows better watershed through your wall.

  • Pack the dirt closest to the top of the wall tightly. This allows water to run over your wall rather than behind it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check your local regulations for maximum wall height, as different soil types are less conducive to sturdy walls. You want to ensure your wall will not fall over.
