How to Make Snow Booties for Dogs
Extremely cold, snowy weather is not only difficult for you, but it is also hard for your dog. The warmth of his paws melts snow as he walks, and if the weather is cold enough, this water freezes instantly again. The freezing water can hurt the pads on his paws, causing them to chap and even bleed. You can take care of his little feet by making him a pair of his very own snow booties that will keep the paws warm and the puppy cozy.

1
Measure the length and width of one of your dog’s paws with a ruler. Make sure you include his claws.
-
2
Add 2 inches to the width and 5 inches to the length measurements. Cut out two rectangular pieces of the fleece according to these measurements with scissors.
-
-
3
Cut out one circle of suede to fit under of your dog’s paw.
-
4
Place the circle on a piece of the cut fleece. The circle should be placed 1 inch up from one of the short ends of the fleece.
-
5
Stitch the circle in place to the fleece with a sewing machine. Use a zigzag or straight stitch to work around the suede.
-
6
Place the piece of fleece with the suede circle on top of the plain fleece piece, with the suede facing down. Sew the fleece pile together along three of the sides. You should sew the two vertical sides, and the horizontal side closer to the suede circle. Turn the fleece inside out so the suede is on the outside.
-
7
Wrap a piece of elastic around your dog’s ankle so it overlaps by 1 inch at the ends. Cut the elastic to this size.
-
8
Sew an inch long piece of soft fabric hook and loop fastener on the topside, right end of the elastic and an inch long piece of the stiff fabric hook and loop fastener on the bottom, left end.
-
9
Sew the soft fabric hook and loop fastener end of the elastic horizontally to the suede side of the fleece, with the fabric hook and loop fastener facing away from the fleece. The elastic should be sewn 3 inches lower than the open end of the pouch.
-
10
Make three more booties in the same way, for a full set of dog booties.

Tips & Warnings
Use treated suede that can handle getting wet repeatedly.
Do not pull the elastic too tight when securing the booties on your dog’s paws or you may risk hurting the animal.
