Allowing the dog to play in the sunshine after a bath will help dry the ears.

Although there are several types of ear mites that are attracted to a dog’s ears, Otodectes cynotis, is the most common. These mites are tiny, crab-like parasites that spend their entire lives inside the dog’s ears. The female lays eggs in the ear and the larvae feed off of skin tissue. Ear mites can cause inflammation and are uncomfortable for the dog. The key to stopping ear mites is proper ear care.

Instructions

    • 1

Dry your dog’s ears thoroughly after bathing or swimming by gently swiping the inside with the corner of a towel or a cotton ball. Veterinarians recommend against using cotton swabs in a dog’s ear.

    • 2

Treat all the dogs in the household. Ear mites will travel from dog to dog, so it is important that all of the pets in the home are checked and treated, if necessary.

    • 3

Use a commercial ear cleaner at least once a month. These cleaners are designed to dissolve wax and other debris that mites feed on.

    • 4

      Wash the dog’s bedding weekly.
