How to Clean a Cache in OS X

Cache on a Mac OS X operating system refers to data that applications such as web browsers store on your computer. Using stored data helps applications run better because they have faster access to the information. However, the cache can become corrupt, or damaged, and cause system problems. You can delete cache without damaging installed applications, and doing so can help improve your Mac's performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Finder" on the dock to launch a new Finder window. Click "Macintosh HD" under "Devices" and double-click the "Users" folder.

    • 2

Double-click your username folder, double-click the "Library" folder" and double-click the "Caches" folder.

    • 3

Double-click the folder belonging to the application for which you want to delete cache. Click the "Edit" menu located on the top and click "Select All." Drag all the items to the Trash bin.

    • 4

Click "Macintosh HD" again and double-click the "Library" folder. Double-click the "Caches" folder. Click the "Edit" menu on the top and click "Select All." Drag all the items to the Trash bin. Empty the Trash and restart your computer.
