How to Install a Garage Door Aluminum Weather Strip
Aluminum weather strips are used to insulate the bottom of a garage door. The top and sides of the door are usually insulated by vinyl or foam weather strips because of their ability to flex as the door moves up and down. Weather stripping seals the gaps around your home's garage door. Without it, any cars or belongings stored in the garage could be severely damaged by extreme temperatures, insects or water. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the width of the garage door opening. Purchase aluminum weather stripping that is five feet longer than this measurement.
-
2
Open the garage door about halfway. Check your owner's manual to find out how to do this if you have an automatic garage door opener. You may have to turn it off and open the door manually. Place several boxes or other large items under the door to hold it up while you install the weather strip.

Straighten out the roll of weather stripping along the garage floor. Start at one side of the door and line up the end of the weather strip with the edge of the door. Use roofing nails to attach the aluminum strip to the door. Drive one nail into the door for every six inches of weather stripping. Use a nail set when driving the nails so you do not bend the aluminum weather strip with the hammer.

4
Use tin snips to cut off any excess aluminum once you have covered the entire bottom edge of the garage door. Open and close the garage door a few times to make sure the weather strip is not preventing it from closing tightly.
