How to Remove Old 3M Tape
3M uses strong adhesives on its products. Some varieties of 3M tape refuse to pull from a surface when installed properly. This problem increases when tape remains on a surface for a period greater than six months. Double-sided tape and other thick 3M tapes often require more than a simple adhesive remover to break down the tape and access the adhesive bonded to a material. Using tools designed for scraping that are soft will remove thicker tape without damaging material bonded by the tape.

- 2-inch plastic spackling knife
- Citrus based adhesive remover
- Clean rags
- Water
- Dishwashing liquid

Set the edge of a 2-inch spackling knife at the start of the 3M tape. Tilt the knife blade at a 15-degree angle to the surface of the material containing the tape.

Slide the spackling knife blade forward. Use short strokes to lift the majority of the tape from the material.

Pour a citrus based adhesive remover on a clean rag. Wipe the remaining tape and adhesive residue with the cleaner dampened rag until no sign of the tape and residue remain. Wipe the area with another clean rag dampened with citrus based adhesive remover to ensure the material contains no adhesive residue.

Wet a clean rag with water. Apply one or two drops of dishwashing liquid to the wet rag. Wipe the area you removed the 3M tape thoroughly to clean the material.

Rinse the dishwashing liquid from the material with water.

Tips & Warnings
Use acetone in a well-ventilated area if you cannot locate a citrus based adhesive remover.
