How to Add Free HTML Games to Your Website With No Flash Required thumbnail
Your HTML5 game runs in most browsers, even on some mobile devices.

Adobe’s Flash platform has been the standard for online Web browser-based games for a number of years, however, this is quickly changing. There are several factors contributing to this shift: including Flash’s reputation for being unreliable, causing browsers to crash, its exclusion from the iPhone and iPad, and HTML5’s promising debut. Thus, if you are planning on developing a browser-based game and adding it to your website, you may want to move to the standard HTML5.

Instructions

    • 1

Outline your game. Coding a game is complicated enough and there is no need to further complicate the production process by not having the product and production schedule mapped out before you begin working.

    • 2

Code your game’s engine, if you are not using an already coded one. There are number of free open-source gaming engines readily available on the Internet; Sea Monkey and Eclipse are open source choices. However, your needs may require a more custom solution, so you may want to use a different tool. Depending on what your game's needs are you may want to modify an existing engine or code your own from scratch. It should also be noted that HTML5 games do not have to be coded completely in HTML, so depending on your needs and experience, you may want to take advantage of this by incorporating some Java Script, or other web programming language, into your code.

    • 3

Develop the character models and other art assets you intend on using in your game. You can use any tool that you prefer for this, because of the open nature of HTML5. It is recommended that you not put too much detail into your character models, as a high polygon count—the small triangular shapes and patterns that make up graphical components used in computer programs—can cause your browser game to be slow to load and choppy; this will also depend in part on the users bandwidth.

    • 4

Design the levels or stages of the game, using the tool of your choice; as with model development there are a great number of different tools available for level design and it is important that you select the one most appropriate for your particular project. As when you were designing your character models, you are going to have to be mindful of the detail you put into your game’s levels, since more detail means slower load times and can lead to lag.

    • 5

Debug and playtest your game. Playing a buggy game can annoy a gamer, so get as many of the bugs out of your game as you can find before releasing it.

    • 6

Deploy your game. HTML5 allows the code of your game to go directly in your Web page’s HTML code. No special tools are required to modify HTML5 code, so feel free to use any text editor you are comfortable with.
