How to Install a Fuel Pump for a 1997 Chevy Blazer

The fuel pump in the gas tank of a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer takes the fuel in the tank and delivers it to the engine via the fuel lines. When the fuel pump goes out, the engine becomes starved of fuel. To fix the problem, the fuel pump has to come out and be replaced with a new one. The process should take about two hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the Schrader valve. The Schrader valve is on the top of the engine, connected to the fuel line. Put the drain hose from the fuel pressure gauge into a gas can. Push the pressure relief button on the gauge and allow the fuel to empty into the can. Once the pressure is gone, remove the fuel pressure gauge.

Lift the rear of the Blazer with the jack. Put jack stands underneath the frame to support the weight of the vehicle. Next, place the jack underneath the gas tank and lift it until the pad just contacts the gas tank.

    • 3

Unbolt the gas tank from the frame with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Lower the tank using the jack until you can see the top of the fuel pump. Disconnect the electrical connection on the pump with your hands, then push in the white tabs on the fuel lines to remove them from the pump. Lower the tank from the Blazer and pull it out from underneath the frame.

Turn the locking ring on the fuel pump using the brass drift and hammer. Pull the fuel pump out of the tank and discard it. Set the replacement in the tank, making sure it's oriented the same way as the original, then install the locking ring using the brass drift and hammer.
