How to Microwave Food in Styrofoam
The safety of microwaving food in plastic containers is a hotly debated topic. While the FDA has cleared many plastic containers as safe for microwave use, some people are hesitant to risk the danger of various chemicals leaking into their food. While it is true that plasticizers can leak out of some containers and into food products in small amounts, this is taken into consideration when plastic containers are tested for microwave safety. While Styrofoam may seem like the flimsiest and, therefore, most dangerous type of plastic, FDA testing has indicated that some types of Styrofoam can, indeed, be microwaved safely. Remove any plastic wrap, foil or other covering from the Styrofoam container.

Check the container's labeling. The Styrofoam container should clearly state that it is microwave-safe. If you cannot find this labeling, do not use the container. The shells used by takeout restaurants are generally not safe for microwave use, unless specified.

Provide ventilation while cooking, so that your food is not completely enclosed in the Styrofoam container. Leave the lid off or keep the container open.

Discard the container after one use, if it is disposable.

If you're still concerned about the safety of microwaving your food in Styrofoam, transfer the meal to a ceramic or glass container before heating it in the microwave.
