How to Restore Picture & Fax Viewer
When opening a file for a picture or a fax in Windows the default program used by the operating system to view the file is the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. However, when a new image program is installed the file associations assigned to the Picture and Fax viewer can change if it is no longer the default program. If you want to restore the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as the default program, you will need to adjust a few settings in the operating system.

Manually Change File Types

Right-click the Start button and then select the “Explore” option.

Click the Tools drop-down menu and select “Folder Options” from the list.

Go to the File Types tab and wait for the Registered File Types to appear in the list.

Scroll down the list until you find “JPG” listed under Extensions.

Click the “Change” button to display the “Open With” dialog box. Select Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and then click the “OK” button.

Select a different file type, such as “JPEG,” and repeat step 5 to change the “Open With” program to the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Double-click a JPG or JPEG image file on your system to verify that it opens in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Click the Start menu and then go to the “Run” option.

Type “regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll” in the text box and then click the “OK” button.

Click “OK” on the confirmation message that appears on the screen.

Double-click an image file to verify that it opens in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
