How to Identify Pine Trees & Pine Tree Root Structure

Pine trees can be identified by their needles.

Pines are coniferous trees and belong to the Pinaceae family. Pine trees or conifers can be identified by their branches, which are covered in extremely narrow leaves, or needles. One-third of all conifers, over 100 different species, are pine trees. A number of these are native to North America, and pine trees are also a popular choice for ornamental gardens. You can use several ways to identify different types of pine trees.

1. Look for trees covered in needle-shaped leaves. This is a characteristic that is unique to the pine tree. To determine the particular type of pine tree, count the amount of needles per bundle. Trees with two needles per bundle include the Sand Pine, Shortleaf Pine, Spruce Pine and Jeffrey Pine. Trees with three needles per bundle include the Pond Pine and Loblolly Pine, and trees that have groups of four needles include Limber Pine, Sugar Pine and Eastern White Pine.

2. Search for cones on the pine tree. The scales of a pine cone are arranged in a spiral whorl that overlap. These spirals characteristically reflect a mathematical precision. Although male pine cones are virtually identical across species, female pine cones vary significantly and may help you with your tree identification.

3. Identify pine tree roots by looking at the length, as pines are known for having rather short root structures compared to other trees. The roots of the pine tree also have a relationship with a type of fungi, which absorbs sugars from the pine, while the fungi hairs around the roots help to absorb water. Look for fungi around the tree base to identify it as a pine, but be careful, as these can be poisonous.
