How to Mail a Check to Europe

How to Mail a Check to Europe thumbnail
You can mail a check overseas more securely by choosing the right service.

Mailing important documents, such as a check, to Europe can be done securely if you choose the correct services and follow proper procedures. You could send the check cheaply via regular international airmail, but that is not the fastest, nor the most secure way to do this. Although it will cost more to mail it securely, you’ll have more peace of mind this way.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the check in a standard envelope. You won’t be mailing it only in this, but the envelope makes it easier to keep the check from getting lost while you are en route to the post office.

    • 2

Take the check to the post office along with the address of the destination it needs to go to. Tell them you’d like to mail a check either via Global Express, Express International or Priority Mail International. The post office will tell you the fees for each (it will depend on the destination and the type of service) and supply you with a cardboard envelope to place the check in.

    • 3

Place the check, envelope and all, in the cardboard envelope. Fill out the customs form and write the destination address in the field allotted for that on the envelope.

    • 4

Hand the customs form to the postal clerk. He or she will affix it to the proper area of the envelope. Global Express and the other expedited services supply insurance in case something happens to the parcel, but the clerk may ask you if you’d like to purchase more insurance for a fee—this is probably not necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • As of July 2010, average delivery time for Global Express is one to three days, for Express International is three to five and for Priority International is six to 10 days. The more expedited the service, the higher the fee.
