How to Make Scrunchies for Cable Covers

How to Make Scrunchies for Cable Covers thumbnail
Cord scrunchies help camouflage power cables in the home.

Electric cords can ruin a room's décor, whether the cords run from a lamp, a television set or another electronic device. Fabric cord scrunchies offer an attractive and low-cost solution to exposed power cords, while also preventing the cords from becoming tangled together in a giant mess. Use fabric that matches other textiles in the room or make the scrunchies from scrap fabric. The only rule for the fabric is that is must be at least as long as the cord you are camouflaging.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the power cord between the plug and the device it connects to. Add 12 inches onto this measurement.

    • 2

Cut a strip of fabric the same length as your measurement and 4 inches wide.

    • 3

Fold over 1/2 inch of fabric on the 4-inch-wide ends of the strip. Fold so the wrong sides of the fabric are facing each other. Sew across each end to secure the fold and create the end hems.

    • 4

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin together.

    • 5

Sew the fabric together 1/4 to 1/2 inches in from the rough edges to make a fabric tube. Leave a 4- to 6-inch tail of thread attached to the fabric when you snip the thread after sewing.

    • 6

Thread the tail of thread through a large upholstery needle and tie the thread so it cannot slip off the needle. Pass the needle into the tube opening and work the needle out of the other end of the tube. Pull the needle out so the thread pulls the opposite end of the tube through itself and turns the tube right side out. Trim off the excess thread.

    • 7

Slide the scrunchie tube over the power cord. Arrange the scrunchie so it isn't covering the plug end of the cord.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a wider scrunchie and thread multiple cords through it if there are several cords leading to a single device, such as with a home entertainment system.

  • Do not allow fabric to touch the outlet or plug prongs because this can pose a fire hazard.
